History
1955
Durham Sheet Metal Works Ltd (DSM) was founded in Wapping Street, South Shields, County Durham. From this riverside location the ship building/repair industry was catered for.
1975
DSM has outgrown the original premises and moved two miles up the river to their current facility Progress House, opposite the Port of Tyne. This provides approx. 1,800 M2 of shop floor space serviced by two overhead cranes up to 5te.
With the decline of the ship building industry diversification was required by the middle of the 1980s. This was primarily sought in the power generation market, specifically sheet metal work for Gas Turbine intake/exhaust systems. DSM starts fabricating structural steel items to complement its service.
2014
Fast forward to 2014 and major markets are now Subsea/Marine, Nuclear and Oil & Gas. More space is required, and we take over the main shed in the historic Taylor’s Foundry site which is adjacent to Progress House. This adds approx. 2,800M2 and an additional four overhead cranes rated up to 15te. Progress house is immediately converted to a stainless steel only facility whilst the Foundry will cater for all carbon steel work.
2024
We now go by the trading name of DSM Fabrications to reflect the fact we do more than sheet metal work.
We are still operating from both facilities and our major markets are currently Subsea/Marine, Nuclear, Defence and Scientific.
